Magician rounds off an exciting ‘Science Week’
A magician provided a fitting climax to a week of activities to celebrate Science Week, all themed around the topics of ‘light and illusion.’

The week was packed full of events.  Years 4 and 6 learnt about the nature of light at first hand by making their own periscopes and kaleidoscopes, while a ‘Glow Show’ demonstrated to Year 5 pupils the nature of coloured light.

Years 7 and 8 took a trip to the Science Museum to learn about space exploration.  They throughly enjoyed an IMAX 3D film, entitled 'Space Station'.  Year 8 pupils visited Tonbridge School for a lecture on ‘Light and Illusion’, and enjoyed blowing up hydrogen balloons in the chemistry lab.  They then carried out some practical investigations into the workings of the eye and the camera by dissecting eyes, and producing their own photographs using a pinhole camera.

Years 2 and 3 investigated  light and sound in the ‘Physiodome’.  Not to be left out, children from the nursery, reception and year 1 created an array of illusionary pictures.  Even parents had a chance to join in with a challenging Family Quiz.

Mrs Beal, Head of Science commented “Science Week is always very popular at Hilden Grange and it is a wonderful way to stimulate the children’s interest in science. We choose themes that allow for a wide scope of activities involving the whole school, and it is very gratifying to see children from the nursery right up to Year 8 getting involved and enjoying science.”
