Over half term 36 pupils and 6 members of staff set off for the sunny Bay of Naples. Our destination was Vico Equense, a small town on the coast near Sorrento overlooking the bay. We quickly settled into our comfortable hotel, well situated for exploring the local sites. During the week we visited the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, (where the children were lucky enough to see a newly excavated skull!), climbed Vesuvius and walked into the active sulphurous crater called Solfatara. We wandered around the old amphitheatre at Pozzuoli and saw the cages below the arena where the animals and gladiators awaited their fate. In Naples archaeological museum we admired the wonderful mosaics, statues and other relics from the lost towns and pupils had the chance to do some sketches. For many the highlight of the week was a day on the island of Capri, buying souvenirs and enjoying a very tasty pizza for lunch. Everyone had a fantastic time and we are already beginning to think about next year’s visit!
A more detailed report of the trip will appear in the forthcoming edition of the Dolphin.
