A team from Hilden Grange fought off some stiff competition and demonstrated an impressive breadth of knowledge to win the John Bickmore Shield, at the IAPS District General Knowledge Competition, on 5 May.
The questions were based around subject areas, including English, History, Geography, Art and Mathematics, and were set at a very high level. The team, whose ages ranged from 10-13, were faced with questions that would have challenged most adults. For examples, they were asked "Which metal is obtained from Pitchblend?" and "for which form of art was Praxiteles famous?".
The competition was closely contested. After 10 rounds of questions, the top five teams were all within four points of each other. However the combined brain power of the Hilden Grange team proved enough to secure them first position, beating the second-placed team by just one point!
