Fireworks in the lab

It’s Friday, it’s 4.30pm, it's time for the Mad Science Club to unleash mayhem in the lab!

Last week, the members of the Mad Science Club had a wonderful time investigating the science behind the bangs and whizzes of fireworks night.   Under the watchful eye of Mrs Beal, the intrepid young scientists were brave enough to burn magnesium, and dropped iron filings into the flame of a Bunsen burner to create their own sparklers.

They also investigated flame tests and found that metal ions have their own distinctive flame colour.  A demonstration of indoor fireworks ended a highly entertaining session, as a small brown disc was transformed into a long black snake, burning with a vivid green flame.
